My golden retreiver will not allow other dogs to come near me (except my other golden) in the dog park and outside. I can not even go up to them anymore! I try time outs, but it is very hard to get her attention and the other dogs’ owners freak out thinking that she will hurt their dog. She plays fine (submissively) with any dog as long as they don’t get close to me. Any ideas?

I noticed my pet dog snoppy only plays with male dogs only, he actually runs the female dogs, I mean he chases them away, and humps his male companions, does this means he is gay? Are there gay animals, please put my mind at ease here.
Anyone out there ever had this experience with any pet. Thanks.

I’m mulling over the idea of getting a second dog. I have a dog now, a dachshund. She’ll be almost a year old when I would bring this “maybe” second pup into my life.

So, for anyone who has ever brought another dog into a home with an existing dog…what effect did this have on the first dog? Did he/she seem happier? Glad to have a canine playmate? Confused? Depressed? Scared? I’m fully aware that dogs are pack animals and it is natural for them to live together, but I can’t help but worry.

Also, what effect did it have on his/her relationship with you? Did you stay close, or did both dogs grow a bit more distant from you? I always worried that if they have each other, they won’t need me! Haha, that sound a little selfish, but that was my thought. I love her very much and I would hate our “relationship” to be negatively affected.

I’ve always only had one dog at a time, so anything else you can tell me about having more than one dog would be very helpful!
Thanks to everyone who has answered so far. I’m really looking for personal experiences and stories. Please, if you’ve introduced a second dog into your home, share them with me. This is a very important decision for me.

Raymond - Ha, my pup is at the vet right now being spayed. Definitely not interested in pups (although they would be cute). I’m no backyard breeder.

My baby LOVES dogs. She says “dog” at least 5 or 6 times a day and we don’t even have a dog. So, for her 1st birthday (in about 2 months) its gonna be a Dog Day ;-D. Please don’t say she won’t remember, because I’d have to beg to differ. I remember my 1st birthday and her Dad has early memories, too.

Besided Clifford the Big Red Dog and real dogs, the pet store, etc., what are some other dog themed things? Ideas?

I have done a lot of research on dog breeds and would like any personal experience that anyone has had. I have a small child (she will be around 2 when we get the dog), I am a stay at home mom. My husband will be traveling a LOT for work soon so I would like a good watch dog. We have a place with a nice size yard, but the dog will be an inside dog. I would like a breed good with kids (most are if raised with them), and a good watch dog the dog doesnt have to be a guard dog, but it would be nice to feel protected. We do not have any other dogs, however we do visit family often with several other dogs on acerage. Any personal experience would be helpful. Thanks for your time!
I have been going to the local shelter every week now. I am still doing research and want to make sure of what I want. I dont believe in just buying a dog because it is “cute” and it ending up in a shelter.

We will be moving to germany and getting a dog there. We want a dog thats going to be smart(with training from us) and good for a future family. I want a big dog, like a sharpei (not sure on spelling), but I think he enjoys smaller dogs with more energy. Whats some good options for us?

I will be able to get a dog, if it lives primarily outside. I just need a way of keeping him in the yard. I don’t think I will be able to get a fence. I would rather not get an electric dog fence. If that is my only choice I would consider it, but I don’t like it at all.

Tying the dog with a rope. I would worry that he would get caught up in it and hurt himself. I really don’t know how much awarness they have of them. But, this would probably be the one I go for if we can’t get a fence.

Would there be a way to train the dog to stay in the yard?
Do you have any ideas to share on what I could do?

If you are worried that the dog will be bored, I have a LOT of time to spend. I am very much a dog person. If I could I would let the dog in the house in no time.

Thanks!
I forgot to mention that the dog will be sleeping in the house at night. The dog will also be able to come inside on bad weather days to play inside and to eat. I am outside a lot be with the dog so he won’t be bored or isolated.

We are in the early stages of making plans to adopt a dog. We are aware that adopting means we will most likely get a mixed breed but we have heard conflicting info on which dogs are compatible with young children.

The children are old enough to respect a dog but just the same we want a dog that will play but not too rough.

I’m just looking for some ideas so when it is time to start looking we know which dogs to rule out.

My dog seems to throw up most treats and foods that we give him because he has a super sensitive stomach. We have found one brand of food called natural choice that is for sensitive stomachs that doesn’t make him sick and have been giving it to him for quite a while now, but i really don’t think that my dog likes it. Does anyone have any other recommendations of food for my dog?
