I have seen this comment many times in the answers justifying Koreans eating dog. My response has always been, “Dogs are pets, but pigs and chickens aren’t.”

What do you think?

This question isn’t about judging Koreans who eat dog. I live in Korea and I will never eat dog, but those who choose to I have nothing against.
Many good answers here. I can’t decide so I’ll let Gaya decide in the voting. Thanks everyone.

I think people get squeamish about eating animals they view as pets.

I dont’ think there’s any REAL difference.

Really, nothing. People are just squicked at the idea of eating a domesticated animal. We only want to protect the CUTE animals.

I’ve never tried dog, but I’m not going to rule it out just because some dog somewhere is someone’s pet. I know people who have pet pigs, and they still eat bacon. As long as you’re not eating MY dog, I don’t see a problem with it.

Dog’s are man’s best friends. They have names like Rover, Lassie, Lady, and Rin Tin Tin. Chickens and pigs don’t have nice names and live as a member of the family.

Personally I could never eat dog. I consider them man’s best friend and they can be very smart. They love you unconditionally and are used to find people and drugs. They have even saved peoples lives. I’ve never understood how people can eat something I consider so precious and cute.
To each their own I guess.

we don’t eat pet dog. we eat eatable dog. boshintang is very good food in my opinion. I love it. It’s just expensive I can’t afford it everyday. If you won’t eat boshintang, you just missed the great food in your life. It’s great loss for your life I think.

My neighbor has chickens as pets. They do not eat any of them, and they treat them like their pet dog. People just think dogs are too cute to eat.

    i know what you mean
there is NO DIFFERENT between eating a dog & other animals.
but dogs are pets, and people can’t see them eating dogs, because they would think it’s like eating their own pets.
my friend had a chicken for a pet, but she didn’t eat it, but she ate other chickens joyfully.

i will never eat a dog my whole life, i love them. i just can’t see myself doing that, and probably if i owned pigs & cows, i wouldn’t want to eat te either, because i’ll consider them as family

Humans are a bunch of sick creatures. They will eat anything that is alive. This is why they die young. Meat will kill you sooner or later. Humans should eat things that GROW from the ground, NOT living animals. Dogs are all angels when they are born, it’s the humans that make them bad. You give a puppy a lot of love and attention and you will be rewarded with much more love than you can imagine. Remember, if you want a good dog then treat it like you would want to be treated. Don’t eat living animals! There are millions of people that are lonely and looking for love but what they don’t realize is that love if right there at the dog shelters. You will finally have a purpose in life and a reason to enjoy life - MAN’S BEST FRIEND…..A DOG!

After korean War, htere was just famine and destruction, so the Koreans ate whatever they could to survive and it just happened to be a fact that stray dogs were all over , so someone roasted one with a bit of garlic and a side of kimchee and said, AJU Mashiseyo (Vwery Tasty) and the rest is Ke-Gogi history. sorry Lassie. If you go to the Paju-Gun area which covers Munsan city on the west coast to Cholwan valley in the middle part of the country (up North near DMZ) they still openly pen, raise, torch and eat dog just like chicken.

    THANK YOU!
Exactly my point!! I’ve seen questions like “Why do Koreans eat dogs? That’s cruelty’ SO many times.
What I think is to not judge pigs and chickens instead of making dogs not edible just because they’re pets. They’re both animals, duh. And also, dogs aren’t eaten commonly. And this is a way to let cows and pigs and chickens live longer.

There’s no difference, living beans have all the same value. It’s only a matter of culture and tradition.
    I’m vegan though.

There is no difference between eating dog and eating a cow or a pig. The dogs eaten are raised to be eaten and are not someones pet. People around the world eat many different kinds of meat. Pigs, although not as pleasing to the eye are said to be more intelligent than dogs.
I’m sure that these days many Koreans would prefer to eat dog rather than eat American beef.

Keep in mind that ANYYYY animal captured could be considered as a pet. Dog have been hunted as food since the days of Neanderthal Man. Dogs in captivity do not reach maturity as fast as chickens, cattle or pigs.

I have eaten dog meat (keygogi) when I lived there in Korea. My Korean wife cooked it well, and properly seasoned and cooked taste excellent. I have seen these dogs at the Korean markets in Pusan. These dogs are specially breed dogs which are breed for the sole purpose of butchering. They are not TAME by any means, and will bite you just like a wolf would. They are LARGE, shaggy and very mean looking. I have never seen any other breed like these kinds of dogs.

Many Koreans do not eat dog because it is more expensive that other kinds of meat. If given the choice they probably WOULD eat more of it if it was not so expensive.
